Senior Memo

Here it is!  A perpetual Senior Memo!  What is this, you ask?  This is a listing of scholarship information that has been sent to Mrs. Veurink, which will include links to scholarship applications, etc.    I will post these often.  YOU are responsible for following through if you wish.  I do not run (ever) after you nor do I hunt you down for scholarships. Farmer's State Bank Scholarship (2 $500 awards)

    Deadline:  September 1, 2005 

    Requirements:  Attend , an accredited SD college, university or tech school on a full-time basis, obtain a guaranteed student loan from FSB for the year 2005-06

The Mercedes-Benz USA Scholarship Program ($2000 Scholarships) 

Deadline:  March 31 

Eligibility:  GPA 3.0, first in your family to attend college (parents included)

Northern Plains Eye Foundation Scholarships (5 $500 awards)

Deadline:  April 15, 2005 

Eligibility:  Enroll in a health-related field with preference going to students focusing on eye-related health training.

Allianz South Dakota Scholarship (formerly the PIMCO award)($2000 renewable awards)

       Deadline:  March 14, 2005

       Eligibility:  Attend 2 or 4 year SD school, ACT of 27, GPA used as a tiebreaker, date received as final tiebreaker.  HS Course selection must meet SD Regent curriculum.

First Fidelity Bank Scholarship (2 $500 awards given in the First Fidelity Bank community)

Deadline:  April 20

Eligibility:  GPA 3.0, attend a SD institution of higher learning 

Requirements:  Short essay, 2 letters of recommendation, you do NOT have to bank at First Fidelity to apply.

 

Midstate Communications Scholarship (10 $500 awards to be given in the Midstate  service area)  Two scholarships will be given in each of the following areas:  Academic Plan/Goal, Community Involvement, Data/Communications & Business, Agriculture and Rural Cooperatives. 

    Deadline:  April 1

    Eligibility:  Reside in and be an active subscriber to Midstate Communications, selection based on academic achievement, written essay, contributions made to home, school, and community.  You can apply for no more than two different scholarship categories.

    Requirements:  Submit essay, photo.  Applications can be picked up from Mrs. V. or downloaded from www.midstatesd.net

Karst Memorial Scholarship (2 $300 awards)  Given by the Douglas Co. Conservation District

    Deadline:  March 31, 2005   

    Eligibility:  Graduate in the upper 50% of the class, go in to an ag-related field.   

    Requirements:  Selected based on personal achievements, academic achievements, financial need.

Basin Electric Power Cooperative (1 $1000 award)

           Deadline:  February 28, 2005

           Eligibility:  ACT, GPA, extra-curriculars, work and community experience,

           Requirements:  Write a statement of educational goals, stop in for an application

**Can only apply if your parents pay their electric bill to Douglas Electric.

American Cancer Society 2005 Youth Scholarship Program (multiple $1000 awards)

    Deadline:  April 1, 2005

    Eligibility:  Be a cancer survivor from IA, MN, SD, or WI

Ardell Bjugstad Scholarship for Native American High School Seniors

            Deadline:  February 7, 2005

            Eligibility:  Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized Indian tribe with reservation in SD, enter an ag or natural resources field

Annis I Fowler/Kaden Scholarship (2 $1200 awards)

       Deadline:  February 7, 2005

       Eligibility:  3.0 GPA, attend BHSU, DSU, NSU, or USD, major in Elementary Education. Requirements:  Essay

Joe Foss, American Hero Scholarship ($1000 award)

           Deadline:  March 15, 2005

           Eligibility:  3.5 GPA, ACT 21, American patriot, 2 or 4 year school

Fred & Marie Christopherson Scholarship ($2500 award)

           Deadline:  March 15, 2005

           Eligibility:  3.9 GPA, ACT 28, attend a SD university 

 

SD Retailers Scholarship (amount and number of awards varies, generally 6-9 awards, ranging from $500 to $1000)

           Deadline:  April 4, 2005

Eligibility:  Major in a retail-related field at a tech school or college

AAA Travel High School Challenge

            Deadline:  Begins January 2005

            Eligibility:  Participate in a three-stage test of geography and travel knowledge.  Take Stage 1 test online at  http://www.aaa.com/TravelChallenge

            Win $10,000 or $25,000 scholarships and a trip to Universal Orlando to compete in the national finals.  Open to High School students in the USA in grades 9-12. 

 

Wells Fargo Bank Scholarship-Your Ticket to the Next Stage($1000 for you, $1000 for your high school)

            Deadline:  January 14

Eligibility:  Attend higher ed in ND, SD, or southwestern or western MN, academic excellence, leadership, extra-curriculars, community service.  Also, some consideration is given to financial need through income guidelines.

US Bank($1000 random drawing)

            Deadline:  Apply online October through February

            Eligibility:  Attend a 2 or 4 year college, selected by random drawing

Tom Steele Memorial Scholarship ($1000 WILL BE AWARDED to a DCHS student as long as they meet the requirements)

           Deadline:  January 15, 2005

           Eligibility:  Attend a 2 or 4 year college or university or vocational-technical school.

South Dakota Manufactured Housing Award (3 awards of $500)

***Don't overlook this one!  There is low participation around the state.  DCHS students have received this scholarship in the recent past!!!***

           Deadline:  March 1, 2005

           Eligibility:  Varies with each grant. 

           Requirements:  Write an essay on a given question.

           Other stuff:  Stop in to pick up an application or more information.

They will also give $4,500 to high school juniors and seniors to help those students further their education.  They will award:

·        Six (6) five hundred dollar ($500) regional grants will be provided.

 

NFIB Free Enterprise Scholars Award (100 $1000 awards)

       Deadline:  March 15, 2005

       Eligibility:  Interested in the business, entrepreneurial jobs, attend a 2 or 4 year schools

AXA Achievement Scholarship

    Deadline:  December 15, 2004

    Eligibility:  Students should be well-rounded, committed to making a difference and have demonstrated achievement at job, sport, or extracurricular activity.

SD Engineering Society Engineering Scholarship ($1000)

Deadline:  January 29, 2005

Eligibility:  Enroll in a SD Engineering college for fall 2005, earned "high" grades and "high" ACT score.

SD Opportunity Scholarship ($5000 over 4 years)

    Deadline:  You must submit your completed application by September 1st of the year you will be starting college.

    Eligibility:  Meet Regent Scholar requirements (4 yrs English, 4 yrs Math, 4 yrs Science, 3 yrs Social Science, 1 semester Computers, 1 semester Fine Arts, 2 yrs Foreign Language)  ACT of 24, GPA of 3.0

            Eligibility:  Research paper on "Why Has Education Been So Central for John Calvin and Calvinism?", attend Calvin, Dordt, Trinity, or other CRC supported colleges

Dakota Corps Scholarship Program

    Deadline:  February 1, 2005

    Eligibility:  GPA of 2.8, ACT of 24, attend a participating SD institution.

    Requirements:  Agree in writing to stay in SD and work in a critical needs area after graduation.  Critical needs areas are teaching (music, special ed, foreign language, math, science), allied health (nursing, lab tech, etc) and other areas as need arises.

SD Dept. of Ag, Division of Resource Conservation and Forestry (1st place $1100, 2nd place $750, 3rd place $450)

         Deadline:  March 5, 2005

        Eligibility:  This is a speech contest.  2005 topic:  "Grass--Nature's Blanket", open to students in grades 9-12. 

        Stop in for an entry blank, contact your local conservation district for more information.  They would like to see more students participate in this contest, so go for it!!

Power of Family Scholarships (Ten $1000 plus additional bonus prizes)

        Deadline:  March 15 (online submission deadline)

        Eligibility:  Students of any age can apply, must submit one 500-word essay, plus a parent, mentor or coach must submit one essay.

   If you are experiencing anything that is interfering with your ability to learn, please feel free to visit with me.  Some common issues are test anxiety, interpersonal skills, and personal problems.  I welcome visits with students, parents and others who may be concerned about the activities and atmosphere of Dakota Christian High School.  All counseling is done in the light of God's Word, and is completely confidential.  I am open to self-referral, teacher referrals, and parent-referrals.
